How to Host Your Murder Mystery
Dinner Party
The Guide for EnigmaKits Murder Mystery Kits
Welcome to the ultimate guide for hosting an unforgettable murder
mystery dinner party! Whether you're a first-time host or a seasoned
mystery master, this guide will walk you through every step of bringing
your murder mystery kit to life.
1. What's in Your Kit
Your murder mystery kit contains everything you need to host a complete
mystery experience. Here's what each component does:
1. Host Packet - 1 PDF (READ THIS FIRST!)
Your master guide containing:
-
Your Requested Event Parameters Summary: Theme,
setting, player count, difficulty level, etc., the selections you made for our writers to use.
-
Host Profile: As host, you are given a name,
role and short bio associated with the venue (party planner, concierge, B&B owner, butler)
-
Murder Timeline: Time Window when the murder occurs, generally +/- 30 minutes of guest arrival times
-
Setup Checklist: Props, decorations, music, crime board (chalk or
dry erase board) and food/drink suggestions
-
Interrogation Guidance: How to conduct questioning
rounds
-
Clue Release Schedule: When to distribute evidence
-
Host Scripts: Pre-written dramatic speeches for key
moments
- Arrival greeting (sets the atmosphere)
- Murder announcement (reveals the crime)
ACTION: Print this and read it completely before
doing anything else.
2. Character Profile - 1 PDF per Character
You will receive one character identity PDF (marked P1, P2, ...) for
each player, plus two extra character identity PDFs (marked X1, X2) in
case of last minute guests.
Each packet contains:
-
Character Identity: Name, role at the event,
personality archetype
-
Objective: What this character is trying to
accomplish
-
Public Relationships: Known connections to other
characters with backstories
-
Private Connections: Secret ties to the victim
-
Personal Secret: A hidden fact they're keeping from
others
-
Alibi Information:What they'll claim they were
doing during the murder, and how it could be challenged
ACTION: Email each players' character identity along
with their invitation, a week or two before the party. This way they
can prepare their attire and get into character!
3. Invitation - 1 PDF
Contains:
- Event title and atmospheric description setting the mood
- Suggested Attire (faux is fine)
- Arrival time window
- Guest list (character names and roles)
ACTION: Print or email to guests 1-2 weeks before the
party along with their individual character profile. This gets them
excited and gives them time to prepare.
4. Clue Cards - 4 PDFs
Organized by timing:
-
Crime Scene Clues: Available immediately when
murder is announced
-
Later Discovered Clues (2 Rounds): Released after
specific interrogation rounds
-
Red Herrings: Misleading evidence that points to
innocent suspects
Each clue card shows:
- Description of the evidence
- What it suggests
- Which characters it points to
ACTION: Print and cut out individual clue cards.
Organize in envelopes by release timing ("Crime Scene," "After Round
1," "After Round 2," etc.)
5. Interrogation Rounds - 2 PDFs
One PDF per questioning round containing:
- Round number
- Specific leading questions to ask to which character
-
Designed to be opening quetions with expected follow up questions
from interrogater
ACTION: Print these pages and keep with your host
materials. Use them to guide the investigation phase.
6. Solution Envelope - 1 PDF (DO NOT OPEN YET!)
Contains:
-
The Big Reveal Script: Dramatic announcement of the
solution
- Who the murderer is and why
- How they did it: Method, means, opportunity
-
Why others are innocent: Breakdown of each
character's alibis and evidence clearing them
ACTION: Print this, or save the PDF and have
available for end of party, but DO NOT READ IT until the finale. Keep
it sealed in an envelope if printed. Reading it early ruins the
suspense of hosting! As even the host will not be aware of who the
murderer is in advance
2. Pre-Party Preparation (1-2 Weeks Before)
Step 1: Download and Review Your Kit
- Download the ZIP file from your email link
- Extract all PDFs to a dedicated folder
-
Read the Host Packet completely (this is
non-negotiable!)
-
Understand the mystery structure:
- Who the victim is
- When the murder occurs
-
What the investigation involves
- When clues are presented
- How many interrogation rounds and when they occur
- How to use the Crime Board
Step 2: Print All Materials / Email Invitations and Character Packets
| Component |
Quantity |
Tips |
| Host Packet |
1 copy |
Staple/bind together, highlight timing notes, keep separate from
player materials
|
| Character Profiles |
1 per player (4-12 plus the 2 extras) |
Print a copy of each as reference for yourself
Email individual players profile along with their invitation
|
| Invitation |
1 per guest |
Print a copy of each as reference for yourself
Email to each player along with their Character Profile |
| Clue Cards |
Multiple sets |
Print on cardstock if possible, cut out individual cards
Place in envelopes and mark when they are to be released
Mix Red Herring cards with Clue Cards - DO NOT mark as Red Herrings |
| Interrogation Sheets |
1 set |
Keep with host materials, print clearly |
| Solution Envelope |
1 copy |
Print and IMMEDIATELY seal in envelope marked "DO NOT OPEN", the first page is blank so you can print and place in an envelope without seeing the content |
Step 3: Organize Clue Cards
Create an organization system:
-
Get envelopes or small bags (one per release
timing)
-
Label clearly:
-
"Crime Scene Clues" (distribute immediately after murder
announcement)
-
"After Round 1" (distribute after first interrogation round)
- "After Round 2" (distribute after second interrogation round)
- Include Red Herrings DO NOTmark as Red Herring
-
Place corresponding clue cards in each envelope
- Keep envelopes in order in your host area
Pro Tip: Paperclip each envelope to your Host Packet
timeline so you know exactly when to release each set.
Advanced Tip: Instead of all clues on cards, a select clue or two
may be presented with the Host receiving a phone call (from crime lab, anonymous caller, security team, etc), then informing the guests.
The call can be made by a non playing person, or the call can be faux.
This will diversify the presentation of the clues.
Step 4: Review the Setup Checklist
Your Host Packet includes suggestions for:

Theme-appropriate décor (Victorian mansion: candelabras; Sci-Fi: LED
lights)
